IMS Animal Welfare Workshop

At its Amsterdam meeting in October, the IMS Executive Council approved the idea of having an animal welfare workshop during the spring 2007, with the following objectives :

  • establish closer ties between the AWC members
  • develop an action plan for the AWC
  • prepare a PR operation for the May 2007 OIE General Session

INTERBEV, the French Meat and Livestock Association, and INAPORC, the French Interprofessional Pork Council jointly hosted the meeting on April 12 and 13, 2007. The meeting has been held in Hotel Ambassador, in the heart of the Opera area in Paris.

On the evening of April 12, a gala dinner has been organised at the Lido, one of the world's most famous cabarets, which has "added sparkle to the City of Light since 1945"!

A message from the IMS Animal Welfare Committee Chairman :

While all of us in the industry understand that maintaining the health and welfare of our animals is both the morally correct and most profitable approach, there is growing worldwide concern that we are somehow not doing our jobs. As a result, a number of perhaps well-intended, but certainly misdirected prescriptive efforts have been aimed at animal agriculture through regulation or legislation. Now that the OIE is tackling this issue, this IMS workshop is our opportunity to develop a common and realistic stand on the subject. So please join us as we review the history of the animal welfare movement, review current regulations, see the latest research on animal welfare practices and develop measurable welfare outcomes.
